Date of Birth of the prophet (peace be upon him)

Birth of the prophet

Question: When is the birthday of demise of the prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)?

Answer: The precise date of the birth of Muhammad is disputed among the historians and scholars. Ibn Jowzi states that the scholar’s consensus is that the prophet was born in the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-Awwal (570 A.D).

A lot of people are under the impression that the prophet was born on the 12th of Rabi` al-Awwal, but according to majority of the scholars the exact date of birth is unknown.

Abu Qataadah (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked regarding the fast of Monday. He replied, ‘It is the day I was born and also the day when the first revelation was sent upon me.’[1]

From the above Hadeeth, it is clear the prophet was born on a Monday.

There are differences of opinions in regards to the exact date of birth of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Allaamah Kawthari (Allah have mercy on him) prefers the 9th of Rabi’ al-Awwal.[2] Allaamah Qastalaani (Allah have mercy on him) states that the majority of the Muhadditheen and historians have also preferred the 9th of Rabi’ al-Awwal.

Many great events took place prior to the birth of the beloved final messenger of Allah, Muhammad the son of Abdullah. The prophet was born fifty or fifty five days after the incident in which Abraha tried to demolish the Ka`bah with his great army consisting of elephants. The Arabs named that year “year of the elephant”. (To read more about this incident please visit Army Of Elephants article.
