True Tranquility Lies in the Remembrance of Allah

In a world filled with distractions, worries, and fleeting pleasures, people search for peace in different ways—some in wealth, others in status or relationships. Yet, true tranquility, the kind that settles the heart and brings lasting contentment, is found only in the continuous remembrance of Allah.

Dhū an-Nūn (May Allah have mercy on him) beautifully expressed this truth:

ما طابت الدنيا إلا بذكره

“The world is only sweet with His remembrance.”

“And the next life is only sweet with His forgiveness.”

“And Jannah is only sweet with seeing Him.”

The Qur’an on Finding Peace in Allah’s Remembrance

Allah Himself tells us in the Qur’an that the key to inner peace is His remembrance:

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَطْمَىٕنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَىٕنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ

“Those who believe and whose hearts find tranquility in the remembrance of Allah. Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:28)

This verse reminds us that nothing in this world can truly bring peace except the constant remembrance of Allah. While material comforts may provide temporary happiness, they cannot fill the void within the heart. Only when we engage in dhikr (remembrance) and connect with our Creator do we experience true tranquility.

The Prophet on the Power of Dhikr

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ repeatedly emphasised the importance of remembering Allah. He said:

“The example of the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not is like that of the living and the dead.”(Bukhari & Muslim)

Just as the body cannot survive without food and water, the heart cannot thrive without dhikr. The more we remember Allah, the more alive our hearts become, filled with faith and serenity.

How to Attain Tranquility Through Remembrance

Here are some ways to bring continuous remembrance into our daily lives:

  1. Reciting the Qur’an: The Qur’an is the ultimate source of dhikr. Engaging with its meanings, reciting its verses, and reflecting on its messages bring immense peace. Allah says:
“Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most upright.” (Sūrah Al-Isrā 17:9)
  2. Making Dua and Seeking Forgiveness: The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best supplication for seeking forgiveness is: ‘O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me, and I am Your servant…’” (Bukhārī)
Regularly asking for Allah’s forgiveness and calling upon Him in du’a strengthens our bond with Him and brings peace to the heart.
  3. Praising Allah in Daily Life: Simple phrases like SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (All praise is for Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) keep the heart connected to Allah.
    The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Shall I not tell you of a statement that is light on the tongue but heavy on the scales? It is: SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi, SubhanAllahil Aẓim.” (Bukhārī & Muslim)
  4. Praying Salah with Presence: Salah is the most powerful form of remembrance. When performed with khushūʿ (humility and focus), it transforms the heart and brings a sense of calm. The Prophet ﷺ would turn to prayer during difficult times, saying:
“O Bilal, call the Adhān, and bring us comfort with it.” (Abū Dāwūd)
This teaches us that true relief and peace come from prayer.

The Ultimate Reward: Seeing Allah in Jannah

Dhū an-Nūn’s final statement reminds us of the greatest joy of all:

ولا طابت الجنة إلا برؤيته
“And Jannah is only sweet with seeing Him.”

The highest level of happiness for a believer is not only entering Jannah but gazing upon Allah Himself. Allah says in the Qur’an:

وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَىٕذٍۢ نَّاضِرَةٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ

“On that Day, faces will be radiant, looking at their Lord.” (Surah Al-Qiyāmah 75:22-23)

The Prophet ﷺ also confirmed:

“Indeed, you will see your Lord just as you see the full moon.” (Bukhārī & Muslim)

This is the ultimate tranquility—the moment when every difficulty, every hardship, and every sacrifice will be forgotten, and all that remains is the overwhelming joy of seeing Allah Himself.

Conclusion: Living in Remembrance

If we want peace in this life, let us increase in the remembrance of Allah. If we want peace in the next life, let us seek His forgiveness. And if we long for the highest joy in Jannah, let us strive to be among those blessed to see His glorious face.
