Gratitude is one of the most powerful expressions of faith and humility. It nurtures relationships, increases blessings, and strengthens our connection with Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasised its importance when he said:
“One who fails to express gratitude to others fails to express gratitude to God.” (Tirmidhī)
This ḥadīth highlights that gratitude is not only a moral virtue but also a fundamental part of faith. When we appreciate the kindness of others, we are ultimately acknowledging the One who made it possible—Allah.
Allah repeatedly reminds us in the Qurʾān that gratitude leads to increased blessings:
وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ وَلَئِن كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِى لَشَدِيدٌ
“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favour]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'” (Surah Ibrāhim 14:7)
This verse serves as a divine promise—when we acknowledge and appreciate the blessings we have, Allah increases them. However, ingratitude leads to loss and hardship.
Expressing gratitude is like a warm hug for the soul. It not only strengthens our relationship with Allah but also deepens our bonds with family, friends, and the people around us. When we say “thank you” to someone, we recognise their effort, making them feel valued and appreciated.
The Prophet ﷺ was the best example of this. He would always show appreciation, whether it was for a small act of kindness or a great favour.
In a hadith, He ﷺ said:
“Whoever does you a favour, return it. And if you cannot find anything to give in return, then pray for him until you think you have repaid him.” (Abū Dāwūd)
This teaches us that gratitude is not just about words—it’s also about reciprocation, kindness, and making dua for those who help us.
The highest form of gratitude is acknowledging Allah’s blessings and remembering Him throughout our day. The Qurʾān reminds us:
فَٱذْكُرُونِىٓ أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ لِى وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ
“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:152)
Gratitude isn’t just about words—it’s also about actions. We can express thankfulness to Allah by:
- Praying with sincerity – showing gratitude for the gift of faith.
- Helping others – using our blessings to benefit those in need.
- Speaking kindly – uplifting others through our words.
- Giving charity – sharing what we have as a sign of appreciation.
Gratitude is a small act that carries immense rewards. It softens hearts, strengthens relationships, and brings divine blessings into our lives. When we make it a habit to appreciate both Allah’s favours and the kindness of people, we cultivate a life of peace and contentment.

Aaishah narrates: The speech of the messenger of Allah was so clear that all who heard it, understood it.
