The Excellence of Play: Lessons from the Prophet’s ﷺ Gentleness

In our modern, fast-paced world, we often measure “greatness” by productivity, titles, and the weight of our responsibilities. We wear our busyness like a badge of honour, often at the expense of the little eyes watching us from below. However, a beautiful narration from the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ reminds us that true stature is found in the ability to stoop down to a child’s level.

A Scene of Divine Humility

Imagine the scene: The man chosen to lead an entire Ummah, the Final Messenger ﷺ, is found on his hands and knees. On his back sit his beloved grandsons, al-Hasan and al-Husayn. He isn’t just supervising them; he is active in their joy, acting as their “camel” in a moment of pure, unscripted play.

When an onlooker witnessed this scene, Prophet ﷺ said, “What an excellent camel is your camel!” the Prophet ﷺ didn’t feel embarrassed or reassert his authority. Instead, the moment was completed with a compliment to the children: “And what excellent riders you are!”

Key Lessons for the Modern Heart

  • Greatness is Never Too Busy: If the man carrying the weight of Revelation could find time to crawl on the floor for a child, none of us are “too busy” to put down our phones and engage.

  • The Sunnah of Gentleness: Compassion toward children isn’t a secondary trait; it is a core prophetic practice. Gentleness (Rifq) validates a child’s worth and builds a foundation of security and love.

  • Play as Worship: This interaction shows that nurturing the hearts of the next generation through joy is, in itself, an act of spiritual excellence.

A Prayer for the Family

As we strive to embody this prophetic gentleness, we turn to the beautiful supplication from the Qur’an:

رَبَّنَا هَبۡ لَنَا مِنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِنَا وَذُرِّیَّـٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعۡیُنࣲ وَٱجۡعَلۡنَا لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ إِمَامًا

“Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.” (Surah Al-Furqan, 25:74)

Let us remember that to be an “example for the righteous” often starts on the living room floor, playing with those who call us home.
