Reflection on Qur’an 27:62: Who Responds to the Distressed

“Who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him, removes hardship, and makes you successors on the earth? Is there any god besides Allah? Little do you reflect.”

This verse teaches us three important lessons about Allah and our purpose in life.

First, Allah alone responds to those in distress. Ibn Kathīr explains that when a person is truly in need, there is no one to turn to except Allah, and only He can remove their hardship. One narration from a man of the Hujaymī tribe records the Prophet ﷺ saying, “I call to Allah alone, who, if harm touches you and you call Him, He removes it.” (Aḥmad) This reminds us to place our trust in Allah in times of difficulty.

Second, Allah grants humans the role of stewards on the earth. Ibn Kathīr writes that He appoints each generation to succeed the previous one, spreading humanity across time and space with wisdom. This teaches us that while we rely on Allah for help, we also have a responsibility to care for the world and the people around us.

Finally, the verse reminds us to reflect on the uniqueness of Allah. There is no god beside Him. He alone has the power to respond to our calls, remove hardships, and shape the destiny of humankind. This encourages mindfulness and gratitude in every aspect of our lives.

In essence, this verse invites us to turn to Allah in our struggles, trust in His wisdom, and embrace our responsibility as caretakers of the earth.
