Eyes of Devotion: The Path to Salvation in Islam

Muslims are reminded to live a balanced life, walking the fine line between hope and fear. Fear of Allah’s punishment motivates us to avoid sin and strive for righteousness, while hope in His mercy inspires perseverance in challenges and seeking forgiveness for our shortcomings. By maintaining this delicate balance, we can lead lives that are both spiritually fulfilling and morally upright.

A ḥadīth from the Prophet ﷺ beautifully highlights the rewards for those who sacrifice and restrain their desires to attain ultimate salvation and protection from Hellfire:

The Prophet ﷺ said:
The Hellfire is forbidden for the eye that weeps from the fear of Allah.
The Hellfire is forbidden for the eye that remains vigilant in the way of Allah.
The Hellfire is forbidden for the eye that lowers its gaze from what Allah has forbidden.
” (Nasāʾī)

This ḥadīth emphasises three noble qualities:

  1. The eye that weeps from the fear of Allah:
Tears shed out of fear of Allah and sincere repentance shield a person from Hellfire. Such tears reflect a heart softened by remorse and a deep longing for Allah’s mercy.
  2. The eye that remains vigilant in the path of Allah:
Those who dedicate themselves to protecting and promoting the Deen, safeguarding the community, and upholding Islamic values are granted protection from eternal punishment. Their tireless commitment earns them divine reward.
  3. The eye that lowers its gaze from the forbidden:
Restraining one’s gaze from impermissible sights reflects self-discipline and a commitment to chastity. Those who uphold purity in their actions and thoughts are safeguarded from the fires of Hell.

By cultivating these qualities, believers align their lives with the principles of faith, striving for both divine mercy and eternal salvation.
