Building a Strong Connection with Allah

The Prophet ﷺ gave us a profound piece of wisdom:

“Know Allah in times of ease, and He will know you in times of hardship.”

These words remind us of a deep truth: our relationship with Allah should not be based on urgency alone. Too often, we turn to Him only when we are in pain, desperate for relief. But what about when life is smooth and comfortable? Are we still seeking Him with the same devotion?

What Does It Mean to “Know” Allah?

The word “know” in this hadith is crucial. It does not simply mean knowing about Allah—it means recognising Him in our daily lives, remembering Him in moments of ease, and building a bond with Him before trials come. Allah says in the Qur’an:

“And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him. Then when We bestow upon him a favour from Us, he says, ‘I have only been given it because of (my) knowledge.’ Rather, it is a trial, but most of them do not know.” (Surah Az-Zumar 39:8)

This is human nature—we seek Allah fervently in distress but often become heedless in ease. The question is: how do we break this cycle?

Nurturing Our Connection with Allah in Ease

Rather than waiting for hardship to push us toward Allah, we should actively seek Him during times of ease. Here’s how:

  1. Sincere Prayer (Salah and Du’a): Don’t just pray out of habit—be fully present. Speak to Allah in your du’a, even when everything is going well. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever wishes that Allah should respond to him during hardship, let him increase in supplication during times of ease.” (Tirmidhi)

  1. Tahajjud – The Prayer of Love, Not Just Desperation: In hardship, we wake up for tahajjud, seeking relief. But imagine how strong our bond with Allah would be if we prayed it even in ease, simply out of love for Him. Allah praises those who seek Him in the quiet of the night:

“They arise from their beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and they spend (in His cause) out of what We have provided them.” (Surah As-Sajdah 32:16)

  1. Gratitude and Reflection: Recognising Allah’s blessings strengthens our relationship with Him. The more grateful we are, the closer we feel to Him. Allah promises:

“And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you (in favour); but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’”(Surah Ibrahim 14:7)

  1. Consistency in Good Deeds: Small, consistent acts of worship create a lasting bond with Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Why Wait for Hardship?

Hardships have a way of breaking our pride, making us realise how much we need Allah. But why wait for pain to reach that level of sincerity? If we cultivate a strong relationship with Allah when life is easy, we won’t need trials to remind us of Him. Instead, we will already be close, already connected—so when hardships come, we will face them with faith and certainty in His help.
