The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Recite Qul huw-Allāhu aḥad (Sūrah al-Ikhlās) and Mu`awwazatain (Sūrah al-Falaq and Sūrah an-Nās) in the morning and evening three times, it will suffice you for everything.” [Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and Tirmidhī]
The three Sūrahs (Sūrah al-Ikhlās, Sūrah al-Falaq and Sūrah an-Nās) are provided below:
Sūrah al-Ikhlās:
Transliteration: Qul huwal laahu ahad. Allaahus samad. Lam yalid walam yoolad. Walam yakul lahoo kufuwan ahad.
Translation: Say, ‘He is Allah the One. Allah—the Sustainer ˹needed by all˺. He has never had offspring, nor was He born. And there is none comparable to Him.”
Sūrah al-Falaq:
Transliteration: Qul a`oodhu bi rabbil falaq. Min sharri maa khalaq. Wa min sharri ghaasiqin idhaa waqab. Wa min sharrin naffaathaati fil `uqad. Wa min sharri haasidin idhaa hasad.
Translation: Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak from the evil of whatever He has created. And from the evil of the night when it grows dark. And from the evil of those ˹women casting spells by˺ blowing onto knots. And from the evil of an envier when he envies.
Sūrah an-Nās:
Transliteration: “Qul a`oodhu bi rabbin naas. Malikin nas. Ilaahin naas. Min sharril waswaasil khannaas. Allathee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin naas. Minal jinnati wannaas.”
Translation: Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of humankind, the King of humankind, the God of humankind, from the evil of the lurking whisperer— who whispers into the hearts of humankind— from among jinn and humankind.”
2. The Supplication of Prophet Yūnus
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The supplication of Dhun-Nūn (Prophet Yūnus) when he called upon Him (Allah) while inside the belly of the whale was:

Transliteration: “Laa ilaaha illaa anta subhaanaka innee kuntu minaz zaalimeen”
Translation: “There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except you. Glory be to you!

Transliteration: “Bismillaahil-ladhee laa yadurru ma`as-mihee shay’un fil-ardhi wa laa fis-samaa’i, wa huwas-samee`ul-`aleem”

O Allah, I ask for your pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, in my family and in my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and keep me safe from the things I fear. “Allah, there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills ˹to reveal˺. His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.” (2:255)
He added, “(By reciting it), there will be a guardian appointed over you from Allah (who will protect you during the night) and Satan will not be able to come near you until morning”.
Transliteration: “Aamanar rasoolu bimaa unzila ilayhi mir rabbihee walmu’minoon. Kullun aamana billaahi wamalaaa-ikatihee wakutubihee warusulih. La nufarriqu bayna ahadim mir rusulihi. Waqaloo sami`naa waat`annaa ghufraanaka rabbanaa wa-ilaykal maseer.
Laa yukalliful laahu nafsan illaa wus`ahaa. Lahaa maa kasabat wa`alayhaa maktasabat. Rabbanaa laa tu-aakhidhnaa in naseenaa aw akhta`naa. Rabbanaa walaa tahmil `alaynaa isran kamaa hamaltahoo `alal latheena min qablinaa. Rabbanaa walaa tuhammilnaa maa laa taqata lanaa bih. W`afu `annaa waghfir lanaa warhamnaa. Anta mawlaanaa fansurnaa `alal qawmi alkaafireen”
“The Messenger ˹firmly˺ believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. They ˹all˺ believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers. ˹They proclaim,˺ “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and obey. ˹We seek˺ your forgiveness, our Lord! And to you ˹alone˺ is the final return. Allah does not burden a soul more than what it can bear. All good will be for its own benefit, and all evil will be to its own loss. ˹The believers pray,˺ “Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make mistakes. Our Lord, do not place a burden on us like the one you placed on those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us and have mercy on us. You are our ˹only˺ Guardian. So help us against the disbelievers.” (2:285,286)
16. Doing Good & Helping Others Prevents Unfortunate Endings, Epidemics & disasters
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Doing good prevents unfortunate endings, epidemics and disasters. And the people of good in this world are the people of good in the Hereafter.” [Narrated by Tabrānī and Ḥākim]
17. Holding Fast to Du’ā (Supplication) Benefits
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Du’ā (supplication) benefits against that which befalls and that which has not befallen. So hold fast to supplication, O slaves of Allah.” [Narrated by Tirmidhī and others]
18. Holding Fast to The Night Prayer is a Barrier Against Disease
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Hold fast to Qiyām ul Layl, (the night prayer), for it is the practice of the righteous before you. Indeed Qiyām ul Layl is a means of nearness to Allah, a means of prevention from sin, an expiation for bad deeds and a barrier for the body against disease.” [Narrated by Tirmidhī and others]
19. Cover Food And Drink Vessels
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Cover the vessels and tie the waterskin, for there is a night in a year when an epidemic disease descends, not passing an uncovered vessel or an untied waterskin except that some of that disease lands in to it.”[7] [Narrated by Muslim]
20. Stay Away From Places That Have Been Hit by an Epidemic
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Āmir narrates that ‘Umar went to Shām and when he reached a place called Sargh, he received news that an epidemic had broken out in Shā So ‘Abdur-Raḥmān ibn ‘Awf told him that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “If you hear that it (the plague) has broken out in a land, do not approach it. And if it breaks out in a land where you are present, do not leave trying to escape from it.” [Narrated by Bukhārī and Muslim]

[1] The following are a compilation of aḥādīth in relation to protecting oneself from illnesses and epidemics. The idea of this compilation was taken from a compilation I saw in Arabic by Majalisalthikr. I translated and edited the very same compilation in English. However, I changed the order of the aḥādīth and did not stick to the exact same order as Majalisalthikr. Furthermore, many of the references may not match those of Majalisalthikr as I used those references that I personally found in the books of aḥādīth after cross-checking myself, rather than blindly following their references. Moreover, I did not use the exact same aḥādīth as Majalisalthikr on a few occasions. This is again based on personal preference after cross-checking the references from aḥādīth. I also added headings for each ḥādīth and a few extra footnotes.
[2] Another narration mentions, whoever says this three times, a sudden calamity will not befall him until morning. And he who says this three times in the morning, a sudden calamity will not befall him until evening (Abū Dāwūd).
[3] Other narrations suggest reciting this three times in the morning and three times in the evening for protection (See Tirmidhī and others).
[4] This should be said in such a way that the afflicted person does not hear.
[5] Imām Nawawi ( Allah have mercy on him) states, ” ‘Protection’ here refers to ‘security’, and it has been said it means ‘safety/peace’. (Commentary of Imām Nawawi on Muslim)
[6] Imām Nawawi (Allah have mercy on him) states, “It has been said: its meaning is that it will suffice him from Qiyām ul Layl (Night Prayer), and it has been said: from Satan, and it has been said: from calamities. All of these interpretations can possibly be included (in the meaning of this narration).” (Commentary of Imām Nawawi on Muslim)
[7] Ibn al-Qayyim says: “This is something that medical sciences and disciplines cannot unravel.” (Zād al-Ma’ād)

What is little but sufficient is better than that which is abundant but causes heedlessness.
