The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“A true Muslim is one from whose tongue and hands others are safe, and a true believer is one who safeguards the lives and wealth of others.” (Nasāʾī)

In this profound hadith, the Prophet ﷺ defines faith not through rituals alone, but through the impact a believer has on the people around them. True Islam is not merely something we carry in our hearts or express in private devotion—it is something others feel through our character, our speech, and our behaviour.

Faith That Protects, Not Hurts

The Prophet ﷺ teaches that a genuine Muslim is someone from whom no harm comes—neither through harsh words nor harmful actions. Their presence brings reassurance, not fear; comfort, not anxiety. They are careful with their tongue, knowing that a single word can wound more deeply than a weapon. They are mindful with their hands, ensuring they never violate the rights, dignity, or property of another.

A Guardian of the Community

A true believer, the Prophet ﷺ continues, is one who safeguards the lives and wealth of others. This is a powerful shift in perspective: faith is not only about avoiding harm, but actively protecting others. The believer becomes a guardian of trust, a person others feel safe around, someone who strengthens the fabric of their community through honesty, compassion, and responsibility.

Faith as a Social Responsibility

This hadith reminds us that Islam is not a solitary journey. Our worship refines us, but our character reveals us. The measure of our faith is reflected in how we treat people—family, neighbours, colleagues, and even strangers. Every interaction becomes an opportunity to embody mercy, restraint, and integrity.

In a world where harm often spreads faster than healing, the Prophet ﷺ calls us to be sources of safety, kindness, and protection.

اللهم اجعلنا ممن سلم المسلمون من لسانه ويده، واملأ قلوبنا رحمةً وصدقا، واجعلنا مفاتيح للخير مغاليق للشر

O Allah, make us among those from whose tongue and hands others are safe. Fill our hearts with mercy and sincerity, and make us keys to goodness and locks against harm.
