The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“لَيْسَ الغِنَى عَنْ كَثْرَةِ العَرَضِ، وَلَكِنَّ الغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ”
“Wealth is not in having many possessions, but true wealth is the richness of the soul.” (Muslim)
In a world obsessed with accumulation—more money, more status, more things—this profound ḥadīth invites us to pause and reassess. True richness, the Prophet ﷺ teaches us, does not lie in outward abundance but in inward contentment.
A person may own little, yet walk with a heart full of gratitude and peace. Another may possess fortunes, but live restless, always chasing more. The difference lies not in what is in their hands, but in what is in their hearts.
“وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِ فَأُوْلَٰئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ”
“And whoever is protected from the greed of his soul – it is they who will be successful.” (Qur’ān 59:9)
This verse echoes the same truth: inner greed is what impoverishes, and freedom from it is true success.
Richness of the soul is rooted in gratitude, contentment, trust in Allah, and a deep awareness that what He gives is always enough. It’s not about denying the material, but mastering it, so it never masters us.
Let this ḥadīth be our anchor in uncertain times: seek wealth not in your hands, but in your heart.
اَللّٰهُمَّ أَغْنِنِيْ بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
