Question
Can you advise on the ruling on Face Products that contain Alcohol. such as creams, soaps, sprays…etc.
Can we use them?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
Alcohol is of two types:
1)alcohol extracted from grapes, dates and raisins
Both application and consumption of such alcohol is impermissible because it is considered to be impure.
2)alcohol extracted from other than grapes, dates and raisins, for example alcohol extracted from honey etc or synthetic alcohol (formulated from chemical substances).
Application of such alcohol is permissible and it will be considered pure. However, consumption of such alcohol is impermissible except in cases of necessary medication.
Normally, the alcohol used in creams, soaps, perfumes and deodorants etc is extracted from other than grapes, dates and raisins or is likely to be synthetic, hence permissible to use for application.
However, it should be kept in mind that certain creams, soaps, perfumes and deodorants etc can sometimes contain alcohol that is derived from grapes, dates and raisins, thus making them impure and unlawful to use. Therefore, if one is certain of this then it will be impermissible to use.
