Personal hygiene is an integral part of a Muslim’s lifestyle, as Islam places great emphasis on cleanliness and purity. It encompasses various aspects, including cleanliness of the body, hair, nails, and other personal grooming practices. Muslims strive to maintain cleanliness as an essential component of their faith and adherence to the natural disposition known as Fitrah.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Five are from the acts of fiṭrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, plucking the armpit hair, cutting the nails, and trimming the moustache.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5891)
Cleanliness of the Body
Islam teaches that the body is a trust from Allah, so keeping it clean is an act of worship. ‘Wudhu’ (ablution) before prayer purifies both the body and the soul, preparing us to stand before Allah. ‘Wudhu’ (ablution) involves washing the face, hands, arms, feet, and rinsing the mouth and nose.
This practice is based on the verse:
Allah says:
(Surah al-Mā’idah 5:6)
“When you stand for prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbow, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles.” (Quran 5:6)
Hair Care
Hair care is an important aspect of personal hygiene in Islam. Muslims are encouraged to keep their hair clean and well-groomed. This includes regular washing and combing of the hair to maintain cleanliness and prevent the accumulation of dirt or lice.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever has hair should honour it.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud 4163)
Pubic Hair
Muslims are instructed to remove the pubic hair for both males and females. Removing this hair is part of fitrah and helps prevent bad odour, dirt, and unhygienic buildup. Regular grooming in these areas is a sign of discipline and cleanliness in Islam.
“The Prophet ﷺ fixed the time for us for trimming the moustache, clipping the fingernails, shaving the pubic hairs and plucking the underarm hairs — that we not leave it for more than forty days.”
(Jami at-Tirmidhi 2757)
Nail Care
Taking care of the nails is a recommended practice in Islam. Muslims are encouraged to keep their nails short and clean, as long nails can collect dirt and germs, which can harm health and affect purity in prayer. Keeping nails trimmed and clean ensures both hygiene and obedience to the Sunnah.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Five are the acts of Fitrah … cutting the nails.”
(Sahih Muslim 257)
Oral Hygiene
Oral hygiene holds significant importance in Islam. Muslims are encouraged to maintain oral cleanliness by brushing their teeth regularly, especially before prayers. A clean mouth is beloved to Allah. Using a siwak or toothbrush regularly keeps the breath fresh, prevents disease, and makes worship more pleasing to Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Were it not for the hardship on my nation, I would have commanded them to use a siwak at every prayer.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 887)
Bathing and Friday Ghusl
Regular bathing removes impurities and refreshes the body. Friday ghusl is a Sunnah that shows respect for the congregation and the sanctity of Jumah prayer. Using fragrance adds to the Sunnah of cleanliness and dignity.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male (Muslim) who has attained the age of puberty.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 879)
