Modesty doesn’t bring anything but good

Modesty In Islaam

The Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him said, “Modesty doesn’t bring anything but good”.

(Bukhari and Muslim)

Modesty prevents a person from being disobedient from having bad characteristics and many other bad deeds. If a person is modest he naturally has a good character and stops himself from sinning.

Being modest and bashful applies to every aspect of our lives, and being aware of Allah’s presence helps a person be modest, therefore before we decide to do something evil we should think that Allah is watching and the angels are recording every deed. Every day of our lives we should try our utmost best to do every activity with modesty.

قَالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

الحياء شعبة من الايمان

(رواه البخاري والمسلم)

The Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him said, “Modesty is a branch of faith”.
(Bukhari and Muslim)

When a person has Modesty it prevents him from committing certain sins, and when a person refrains from evil sins it is an indication that he is a believer. For this reason our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) has stated that “Modesty is a branch of Faith”.

Hadhrat Junaid Baghdadi (May Allah’s mercy be upon him) asked someone about modesty, that person replied when you look at Allah’s infinite blessings and your shortcomings the feeling that arises is called modesty, and that is the same feeling that should arise when you commit a sin.

If a person has modesty then many sins will be avoided. When a person is modest they will talk in an appropriate manner, they will dress in a humble manner, and they will conduct their life with great care and with Taqwa (fear of Allah). By bringing modesty in to our lives so many of our day to day issues would get solved. Children disrespect parents as they lack modesty and if we were to resolve this and act in a modest way then the results will be there for all to see.

Islaam is a complete way of life, and amongst a number of things that Islaam encourages modesty has a very prominent place. Sometimes we don’t give as much importance to this great “branch of Iman” and we neglect it while giving other acts of worships more importance. We need to ensure that we give Modesty, humbleness and bashfulness the same importance as we do to other great acts of worship and that it becomes a key aspect of our everyday lives.

As Muslims, if we bring modesty into our lives it will help us in this world and in the hereafter. The way we walk, talk and dress should be done with modesty. When we walk we should keep our gaze low this is not only for men but women also. By keeping our gaze low we will automatically be preventing ourselves from sin as we won’t be looking at every ghair mahram that walks past or looking at billboards and posters of half naked pop stars and celebrities. Whilst talking we should try and speak in a low tone especially women, sometimes you hear and see women fully dressed Islamically with the veil and talking ever so loud which defies the purpose of wear hijaab (veil). Women need to realize this is incorrect and they are committing sin.

Our dressing is very important as this shows a person’s character. Men and Women should dress according to the laws of Shariah. Sometimes you see women dressed in such an inappropriate manner, that having clothes on their figure is extremely revealing it seems like they are not wearing clothes at all. Women should wear loose and baggy clothing so they are not attracting themselves to men. Men should also dress modestly and not according to the latest trends and fashion.

The Messenger of Allah, (peace and blessings be upon him), said, “Those men who wear their trousers below their ankles will, on the day of Qiyamat, have fire on their ankles and Allah shall not look at them with mercy. (Mishkaat)

قَالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

المرء مع من أحب

(رواه البخاري والمسلم)

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, A person will be with whom he loves
(Bukhari, Muslim)

As Muslims we need to be aware of our actions at all times. We need to be really careful and ensure we are not looking up to pop starts and celebrities as our role models as that will not benefit us in any way, instead we will be resurrected with these evil people and end up in the fire of hell.

We should try to make a habit of reading the Seerah of our beloved Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and inhabit his ways and actions into our lives as this will guide us towards the right path and grant us entry into paradise.
