Dream of Kharasha bin Hurr (Allah Be Pleased with Him)

Kharasha bin Hurr said:

I was sitting in a gathering in the Mosque of Madina and in it was an old man of beautiful appearance. He was Abdullah bin Salaam. The old man began relating to us a beautiful Hadith. When he stood the people said: “If it pleases one to see a person from the people of Paradise, then let him see this one.”

Kharasha bin Hurr said: ‘By Allah! I will surely follow him and I will surely come to know the whereabouts of his house.’ So Kharasha followed him, and he went to the extent that he almost left Madina. Then he entered his house. Kharasha said: ‘I sought permission to enter, and he permitted me.’

He then said: “What do you want my beloved brother?” Kharasha said to him: ‘I heard the people saying to you when you stood: “If it pleases one to see a person from the people of Paradise then let him see this one.” Thus it pleases me that I be with you.’ The old man said: “Allah knows best of the People of paradise. But I will tell you why they say that.”

The old man (Abdullah bin Salaam – May Allah be pleased with him) went onto narrate –

‘While I was sleeping a man came to me and said to me: “Stand!” Then he took my hand and I went with him. Then all of a sudden I had paths to my left. I began taking from them, so the man said to me: “don’t take from them, for they are the paths of the people of the left.” Then all of a sudden there were open paths on my right. So the man said to me: “Take this.”

Then he bought me to a mountain and said to me: “Climb!” So I began, when I intended to climb, I fell on my buttocks. I did this many times. Then he took me until he bought me to a pillar. Its top was in the sky and its bottom was in the land. At its top was a ring. Then the man said to me: “Climb upon this.” I said: ‘How will I climb this when its top is in the sky?’ So he took my hand and threw me. Then all of a sudden I was clinging to the ring. Then he struck the pillar, so it fell. I remained clinging to the ring until I entered in to the morning.’

Abdullah bin Salaam then said ‘Then I came to the prophet (May Allah bless him and send upon him peace) and relayed it to him. So he said: “As for the paths which you saw to your left, they are the paths of the people of the left.” He said: “And as for the paths which you saw to your right, they are the paths of the people of the right. And as for the mountain, it is the abode of the martyrs, and you will never attain it. And as for the pillar, it is the pillar of Islam. And as for the ring, it is the ring of Islam. And you will remain clinging to it until you die.”
